    Coworkers are great.
    Gear training is good.
Pay isn’t great considering how hard you work.
    Zero career advancement.
No one wants to hear your opinion to improve customer service.

    Pros:
    -Benefits are good
    -Good work life balance
-Pay is competitive with the market

    Cons:
    -Headquarters is moving to Bellevue
-Very few growth opportunities (especially if you are a woman or over the age of 45)
-Favoritism is a huge issue, don’t expect to move up unless you are a favorite or hired personally by leadership
-Too many layers of ineffective, inexperienced leadership

Overall probably a great place to work retail, but pretty comparable to a large corporate company at headquarters. If you work on product I would suggest finding someplace smaller where you can have a more direct and positive impact on business.

If you have a strong voice, great ideas that would improve service and the working environment, and actually care about your employees, I recommend working for a company that will actually listen – not for REI. I worked in management and was not part of the “boys club”. I truly cared about making a difference to my team and customers but no one else really wanted that. Being an intelligent women made it EXTREMELY hard to make any changes or any progress. The upper management had a blatant disregard for any opinion, particularly a women’s, that did not come from their “favorite” managers, and if you challenged an opinion or if your ideas differed in any way you were threatened with disciplinary action.

My recommendation – DO NOT work here. Find a company that values your opinion and what you have to offer.

On a happier note – the people (non-leadership) were an amazing and wonderful to work with. I truly valued their comradery and received a ton of support. I made friends that I’ll have for life.

My co-workers were the best I have ever worked with, I was shocked at the caliber of people they were able to hire. Which speaks highly of a retail position. Overall the experience was good, my only negative was the customers. Every once in a while you would get a customer who felt they were entitled to the royal treatment and they treated you like their underling which made me want not to work with customers and stay in the back room stocking. The management team I also thought were really awesome, and supportive of the staff.
