While I wouldn’t trade the time I spent at GS for anything else, I learned a lot and met many wonderful people, I was there for nearly four years and started out excited and optimistic, only to end my time there feeling crushed, doing what I could to salvage my sense of self and my spirit.

There are a lot of programs to show support for women but in practice there is a huge pay gap and promotion gap. Women are not promoted nor paid equally to the men at the firm. Mediocrity is tolerated for men and women are expected to work harder for less pay and recognition. The firm is family friendly to a point, but you are expected to work however long it takes to get your work done be it at home or in the office. Many senior women have left for better opportunities elsewhere.

I spent 24 years at Goldman in two divisions and three countries. I experienced discrimination
throughout my career but it actually had gotten worse in recent years. While there are a lot of networks and programs to support women, in practice, the firm does not promote nor pay women as they do men. I am single so can’t comment on whether they are family friendly, however mediocrity is tolerated for men but women are expected to work twice as hard for less pay. I know many women who have left Goldman for better opportunities at other banks.

To work at GS was a dream come true. Many of my experiences were very positive however it was along time ago and when I received my offer my boss said “If you were a man and had a family to support we would offer you more money” I do hope times have changed but not really sure they have,

I had a great experience in many ways because it was my first job out of college, and it set me up well for the rest of my career. But you really only saw women in the lowest levels of the firm, and several of my friends were harassed/preyed upon by older male employees (though I was not). When I started in the mid-1990s, we were required to wear skirts/dresses and pantyhose – no pantsuits allowed. Eventually, one of the few senior women started wearing pantsuits, and that rule went quietly by the wayside. I had many friends and a couple of mentors from that era, but it was still a very discriminatory environment at the time.
