Facebook is defined by our unique culture – one that rewards impact. We encourage people to be bold and solve the problems they care most about. We work in small teams and move fast to develop new products, constantly iterating. The phrase Òthis journey is 1% finished, reminds us that we’ve only begun to fulfill our mission to make the world more open and connected.

It has been one of the best companies I’ve ever worked on, equality is super obvious and it’s excellent. It has very good vibrations in the work area the benefits are very good. The best is a place where you want to go to give the best of you. The versatility of employees is incredible and it helps a lot to open your horizons.

I was a contractor at Facebook for 12 months and my experience was traumatic to say the least. It was my first time as a contractor and at first, I was told I would be treated with the same respect as my fellow full time coworkers. This was not true.

For the first 11 months, I had 0 support from my Facebook manager and since I had no support, my work had no visibility. Every contractor’s goal is to be converted but I had no chance to show what I was capable of and all the impact I had during my time there. My manager at the time had no experience leading a team of people like me, which was also a big problem.

On the last month, this leadership was replaced – for obvious reasons. At first, I was very excited to have such knowledgeable and professional leaders. To my great surprise, my excitement was met with disrespect and suspicion. I was told to choose a set, strict work schedule and to be at my desk at all times; when my son was sick, I was told “you need to cancel all your meetings, I’m not approving work from home” (verbatim), with no sympathy or willingness to help me juggle motherhood and work; I was closely watched and had to disclose the meetings I would participate in and why; I was told “everything you do is wrong and broken” verbatim, without further explanation; my new manager would acknowledge a coworker I was int he same room with, while ignoring me. The environment became hostile, I felt unwelcome and unwanted. I decided to leave and would not return to Facebook if I had the chance.

It is important to note that this treatment was not isolated to me, the entire team of contractors (majority women) was treated in the same manner.

Facebook as a whole wasn’t much different. Contractors were suddenly no longer allowed to park in classic or 20 after 10 am. This change was announced to all employees via one of the many pages, with backlash Contractors were then banned from the gym/ outside activities but this change was announced to contractors only, via email. Facebook claims to be a transparent company but my experience says otherwise.

I believe the problem is in the people Facebook is hiring. The new employee is either extremely qualified and not a cultural fir or a cultural fit and grossly under-qualified. Maybe it’s time to check the hiring process.

No employer is perfect, but my team at Facebook does a pretty good job IMO. I say “my team” because it really does vary from team to team. I think the overall company has the right idea and with a strong female leader at the top, the culture is somewhat more empowering of women. But I have heard of the standard harassment and crude behavior happening on one other team. But that is all I’ve directly heard of in my 3 years working here. So I would say that’s pretty good.

I started as a design contractor and went on to be full time on a team of all male engineers, and though we didn’t have much in common, everyone was nice. I was not only trying to bridge the male/female gap, but also the designer/engineer gap. So that is a bit tricky. But I am lucky to be on a team of genuinely nice guys with very little ego. It has taken some time to build trust and a good rapport, especially since most of them are not used to working with a designer (i.e. someone who has a say in what they build), but I have had a very supportive manager with whom I’ve been able to convince the team on the importance of good design, and that we need each other to build quality products. I have had some moments where I’ve felt under-valued for my impact, or even disrespected by a fellow designer, but my complaints about the situation did garner results. And I do believe they care when I bring up issues. Also, I set my own work hours and feel totally fine with going home early if I want to see my daughter before bedtime. I also work from home twice a week which really helps since the days I commute I typically don’t get home before 7:30. I took a nice long maternity leave (the full 4 months allowed plus a month extra using PTO) and no one made me feel weird about it. Overall I feel good about working at Facebook and would encourage other people, not just women, to work there. We can always strive for better, but I think it’s important to recognize the positives at Facebook, because there are many in my experience.

I’ve been at Facebook for about 4 years. As another reviewer already stated, your experience will be vastly different depending on what team (and more importantly, what people) you work with. The individual team culture varies a lot between teams, as both their values, structure, and internal communication style can be different from one another.

Overall, I’m extremely impressed by the company in terms of the benefits and supportive culture it strives for.

The commute is a challenge if you don’t live nearby. Work from home Wednesdays are great when you can take them and focus in a quiet spot (since the company is growing it can be tough to find), and the health benefits and perks are really great.

I would urge anyone considering Facebook to be excited, but come in with an opinion on what kind of manager and team experience you want to have and try to find that. Luckily, at least in my role, lateral movement through the company is somewhat encouraged after you’ve been on a team long enough, too.

To sum up, I’m very happy with my pay and benefits, and I’ve grown a lot at Facebook. On the flip side, certain teams, particularly their cultures and/or metrics and strategies, haven’t aligned with me. As a company, it’s about shipping quickly and getting feedback via quant data, but the difficulty is shipping the right MVP. I’ve seen difficulties in shipping the right thing and also a lack of desire to iterate, which can be frustrating. That said, you’re never bored and you’ll learn and grow a lot.
