I worked for Medco then ESI from Aug 2011 to Dec 2013 as a contractor. They had an interest in converting me to employee status but the salary was not in line with the fair market value (about 20% below market value) so I declined the offer. I can’t comment on whether it is equal pay (gender basis), it is likely low pay for everyone. Additionally I had concerns about advancement within the company. They had cut a number of senior level positions with the merger and it was quite clear there would not be many openings in the future with fierce competition internally for individuals who had to accept demotion vs. laid offs.
I think ESI handled the integration of systems fairly well. They looked at which systems worked best for their strategy when many mergers just use the buying company systems. I was there while they were converting all their clients over and changing systems for healthcare reform so it was a challenging time. I doubt there would have been a better way to handle it. It would have been good to start this process earlier but no one ever seems to know how much work is involved until it gets started.
Healthcare industry lends itself to politics. I have worked in several companies now and have come to expect it. It’s also fast paced with tons of meetings, emails and IMs going on regularly. There were many days where I could not take 5 minutes to get coffee before the next meeting or emergency hit. Again, ESI is no different than any other healthcare company I have worked for. If you are not prepared for that, choose another industry. It is a growth industry & it has a cyclical workload that does not lend itself to bringing on extra manpower during the holidays.

I was recruited to Express Scripts for a skill they needed after winning a contract in an industry they had little experience in. When I first started I found the company as a whole intriguing. But shortly after I settled in I discovered the culture was not supportive of career development. It was rife with juvenile politics, and very talented folks were terminated because they were perceived as a threat to those less skilled but more politically connected. Management was not transparent and didn’t appear to have a focus on healthy future business development. Additionally, many employees were constantly in fear of losing their jobs. Most of the individuals I worked with were frustrated and generally discouraged.

I left after only three years to work for a different company with a more robust corporate culture and a real interest in its employees.

I worked at ESI from 2012-2015. ESI purchased my company and the corporate cultures never successfully melded. ESI is a place where politics matter much more so than ability or talent. Many folks in leadership are in positions well above their ability level. Aside from the leadership gap, the culture at ESI is definitely in flux. The pay is good but the company then owns you from the non-compete to the awful HR performance process of callibration. It’s cut throat but not based on results, it’s based on popularity. I left on my own for greener pastures and never looked back.

I worked there from 1999-2002 and went back a couple of times afterward for contract work. I loved my jobs in the early years. I had a high position in Self-funded Sales. I was let go during the major mergers. Volunteered to work in the Mail Order and was not allowed. I was told later by somebody that I can move up into corporate but not go down. When I went back to do contract work, I was harassed by the manager of that department since she knew I was high up in corporate. The temporary agency tried to get me a job for full time and the manager ruined me. I have since then applied for numerous job positions and have been rejected right away. Too much politics. There are employees there that do nothing like going for 3 breaks at a hour at a time still working there. I know, plenty of hard working employees been let go.

I couldn’t wait to end my career at Express Scripts fast enough. There is no focus on work-life balance. Shift bids which are based upon seniority more so than performance make it impossible to get a decent shift. I faced sexual harassment during my short career and the perpetrator made a mockery out of my complaint. The method used to address the situation was to move me away from my cohorts and have me sit far from my training classmates. In the 8 months that I worked at Express Scripts I had 5 supervisors the two of which offered inconsistent feedback and support.
